West Virginia University (WVU) Career Services has established comprehensive guidelines to ensure ethical and equitable recruiting practices on campus.
General Expectations:
- Employers must align with WVU’s Values and adhere to the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) Principles for Ethical Professional Practice.
- Must be a legitimate organization with verifiable business details, including name, physical and web addresses, phone number, and a reachable contact person.
- Foreign-based businesses may be verified by the U.S. Department of State.
- Must comply with all applicable local, state, and federal laws, including equal employment opportunity regulations, WVU’s non-discrimination policies, immigration, and affirmative action laws.
Recruitment Conduct:
- All recruitment activities should be coordinated through the appropriate career centers or departments.
- Unannounced classroom visits and unsolicited communications with faculty or staff are prohibited.
- All marketing efforts on campus must receive prior approval from Career Services or the specific WVU School, College, or Department you’re targeting. Avoid aggressive tactics; unsolicited or excessive communications to students are discouraged.
Student Protections:
- Employers cannot charge students fees during the job search or employment process.
- Positions requiring students to purchase or rent sales kits or similar materials will not be posted unless exceptions are granted by Career Services.
- Refrain from pressuring students to attend events or accept offers hastily.
- “Exploding offers,” which require acceptance within 48 hours or less, are not permitted.
- Do not encourage students to renege on existing job offers from other organizations.

Recruitment Opportunities
West Virginia University (WVU) offers a variety of ways for employers to engage with students. All on-campus events are coordinated by WVU staff, including logistics such as parking and room reservations. Events are promoted to relevant audiences through Handshake, social media, and internal listservs. WVU Career Services staff can also arrange catering upon request; costs are the responsibility of the employer.
