What is Experiential Learning?

Experiential learning means learning by doing. Instead of just reading or listening in class, you get hands-on experience that helps you apply what you’ve learned in real situations.

It’s about trying things out, reflecting on what you learn, and using those lessons to grow — both personally and professionally.

Examples include:

  • Internships or Co-Ops
  • Virtual Job Simulations (e.g., Forage)
  • Fellowships
  • Research Opportunities
  • Service or Volunteer Experiences
  • Study Abroad and Global Learning Programs
  • Campus Leadership Roles
  • On-Campus Student Employment

These experiences help you build real-world skills, explore career interests, and stand out to future employers.

Internships/Co-ops

Internships are short-term, structured work experiences that let you apply what you’re learning in the classroom to real-world settings. They help you build professional skills, make connections in your field, and often open doors to full-time job offers after graduation. Look for internships that are paid or offer academic credit that include clear learning goals to help you grow.

Co-ops are longer, full-time work experiences that are built into your academic program. You’ll typically alternate between semesters of full-time work and full-time study, gaining deeper hands-on experience in your field. Co-ops can give you a stronger professional network, more confidence, and even higher earning potential after graduation.

Forage (Virtual Job Simulations)

West Virginia University has partnered with Forage to offer immersive, employer-designed job simulations that help you build career-ready skills. Forage is a free online platform where you can explore different career paths by completing real-world tasks based on actual roles at top companies.

In just a few hours, you’ll work through guided activities supported by pre-recorded videos and example answers from company teams. After completing a program, you’ll earn a certificate you can showcase on your résumé or LinkedIn.

Forage provides a flexible, accessible way to develop practical skills, gain insight into various careers, and stand out to recruiters as you prepare for your future.

Fellowships

Fellowships are funded opportunities that let you take your learning beyond the classroom through research, service, or professional development. They can help you build skills, explore your interests, and make an impact in your field whether that’s science, public policy, the arts, or education. While many fellowships are for graduate or doctoral students, some are open to undergraduates too. Most include an application process and are competitive, but they also come with financial support, recognition, and valuable connections. Explore the fellowships below to see which ones match your goals and interests!

Undergraduate/Graduate Research

Research gives you the chance to work closely with faculty on real-world projects, building your analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills. You can work one-on-one with a faculty mentor or as part of a research team to explore questions, conduct experiments, and create new knowledge. Participating in research sharpens critical thinking, strengthens your analytical abilities, and prepares you for graduate school or your future career.

Volunteer

Service learning combines your classes with hands-on community service, giving you real-world experience while building leadership, empathy, and civic responsibility. Volunteer experience also strengthens your resume by highlighting initiative, transferable skills, commitment, and values, providing relevant experience and demonstrating qualities employers value, like teamwork and leadership.

Study Abroad

Studying or interning in another country lets you experience new cultures firsthand, helping you become more adaptable, independent, and globally aware. You’ll build skills in cross-cultural communication, problem-solving, and flexibility—qualities that are valuable for future careers and personal growth.
